Those who don’t want to use WordPress default search can integrate Google Custom Search to their website, also, Google custom search has the option to monetize their website’s with Google Adsense. Thus, best of both Worlds – Google’s search engine plus monetization.

In short, Google Custom Search is an offering by Google, that provides you your own version of Google search engine, that can be configured and integrated into your website. There are many configuration options offered, to completely customize the looks, search results and many more options.

Why Use Google Search instead of Native WordPress Search Feature

WordPress default search results quality is often questionable, its not perfect and sometimes user can’t find what they are looking for.

Google search results are of better quality

Monetization of search results page (with Adsense for Search)

Good and familiar user interface of Google search

Everyone feels comfortable to search with Google

Customize the look and feel of the results to match your site with Google

Enable autocompletions for your Google search engine

Now that we know why should we use Google search and what are its advantages, let’s integrate Google Custom Search to your WordPress site.

Integrating Google Custom Search in WordPress

Step1: Creating a Search Engine:
Head over to www.google.com/cse and sign in with your Google account. If you don’t have one, then you can also create one. After signing in, click on the big “Create a Custom Search Engine” button.

A three step process will begin. The first step is to set up your search engine. Fill out name, description, language, sites to search (enter your site URL here, in most cases this would be the URL of only one site), select the standard edition, accept terms of service and finally click on “Next”. (click on the below image to enlarge)

Now comes the part where we have to customize the looks. There are some pre-defined themes ready for you to get started. Select any of these theme and click on “Customize”.

Customize the search bar and search results page as per your wish and click on “Next”. Note the various color options, you can choose color that suits your WordPress theme.

In the third step, you will get the code. Don’t copy this code yet. From the bottom of the page, click on “look and feel”.

From “Choose a Layout” section, select “Two page”. This means that we can display the search box on any page and get the results on another page, in the same window.

Click on “Save & Get Code”, you’ll get the code in the next page. Let this page remain open for now.

Step2: Adding Custom Search to WordPress
Now that the search engine is ready and all settings done, we’ll need to integrate the code to WordPress. The first thing we’ll be doing for this is to create a page template. To do this, copy and paste the below code and save it as a PHP file.

<?php
Template Name: Google Search
?>
<?php get_header(); ?>
<div id=”content” class=”widecolumn”>
<!– Google Search Result Code Begins –>
Google Search Results Code Here
<!– Google Search Result Code Ends –>
</div>
<?php get_footer(); ?>

Observe this code carefully, instead of “Google Search Results Code Here”, you need to enter the “search results” code, that’s because we want the results to appear in this page. Save that PHP file, name it something like googlesearch.php and upload it to your active theme’s directory. For e.g. if you are using twentyeleven theme, then the path would be: “wp-content/themes/twentyeleven”. To upload this file, use a FTP client or File Manager from cPanel. With this step done, page template is created and uploaded.

In this get code page, there is a field for “Specify the url in your site where you want the search results to appear”. In this field, enter the page permalink which we created in above step. For e.g. it can be www.yoursite.com/search (where search is the name of the page).

Create a new page and name it something like “Search”. Search results will be displayed in this page. From the “Page Template” drop down menu, select “Google search” as your page template and hit the “Publish” button.

Now, decide where would you like to place that “Search box”. You can place it in sidebar, footer, below posts or any other place. If in the sidebar, then just drag and drop the “Text” widget to the sidebar widget area and paste that “search box” code. If you want to edit this search box in some other area, then you’ll need to edit the respective theme file. But adding the code in the text widget is by far the simplest method to do this. This completes the integration of Google Custom Search to WordPress site.

Google Custom search is constantly evolving and they keep on adding more and more features. The most recent addition was the “autocompletions”. You can also check out documentation on Google custom search if you’re stuck somewhere.

Reviews Theme Guide

Support

Theme Documentation

Please Login or Register to read the rest of this content.

Please Login or Register to read the rest of this content.

What’s cooking at Templatic?

News

First off I’d just like to say Happy New Year to all of you on behalf of the whole Templatic staff! If 2011 was kind to you we all hope 2012 will be just as good; if it was bad, hopefully 2012 will be better. We’re a few days into the new year and everyone is getting back to work, we at Templatic are working on some cool new themes which will show up at our theme store in the near future.

Let’s see what’s coming soon!

The following theme will be the first one to land at Templatic this month. As the screenshot suggests, it is a review theme targeted for bloggers and affiliate marketers who wish to create a review site for different product and services.

Though simple, we’re confident it will be useful for a great deal of WordPress users.

Then comes a totally different, first of it’s kind – Price Compare theme. The theme will prove to be challenging for us to create but once done, we are sure you’d love its design, simplicity and most of all, how it works automagically from the back end.

Lastly, here’s a cool, neat e-commerce theme which is also coming soon. Everything about it is already said earlier so he’re just a fancy screenshot :)

That’s about it for now. Along with this new theme, our team is also working on upgrading existing themes so things might go a bit slow but once it land, it will be firm and solid.

Hope you’ll love what’s coming at Templatic. No problem, that login logo can be changed to your own Company/Blog logo and no plugins are required to do the task. Plugins are great but not really necessary for simple tasks like this. Those site’s that require a login every time, or those with multi authors can create a good impression and give that professional touch by displaying their own logo instead of WordPress logo.

How to Change WordPress Login Logo

The first thing we’ll need to do is to create your logo with the following parameters:
- Image format should be PNG
- Transparent background
- Size should be: 274px wide and 63px height
- Save it with this name: logo-login.png

Now that your new logo is ready with above parameters, connect to your FTP client (e.g. Filezilla) or use File Manager from cPanel. Navigate to wp-admin/images folder. If you’re new to FTP be sure to check out our FTP tutorial

On this path, you will find an image with the following name: logo-login.png. Rename this image to something like logo-login-backup.png or download the image to your hard drive (and delete the copy on the server). This is so you have the original in case you decide not to use the custom logo anymore.

Upload your newly created logo at the same path – wp-admin/images.

That’s done. Your new logo should be live on the website. Check it out by navigating to your login page at: yoursite.com/wp-admin

Here’s a preview of what we can achieve with this useful trick.

See, the login logo has changed which can give the site that unique and professional touch. Just in case, if in future you change the mind, then just replace the old logo-login.png image and the default WordPress image will be restored.

Plugin to Change WordPress Login Image

For those who are afraid to follow this manual method, can use a plugin named Custom Login Logo Lite. Just install this plugin, activate it from your WordPress plugins page and then you will see a new option in settings > Custom Login Logo.

Now all we need to do is to enter the full URL (full path) of the login logo image. Configuring this plugin is a piece of cake. To upload the logo image, go to Media > Add New and upload the image. Now copy the full image URL and paste it in the options of this plugin.

Changing login logo image will only take a couple of minutes. Those who have registration enabled on their website’s, can benefit by displaying this custom logo, instead of the old boring WordPress logo.

Remember: Whenever you update to the latest version of WordPress, you will need to follow this procedure again. Basically, all you need is to just upload the custom logo at wp-admin/images path. That’s all it needs to be done.

Export listings from GeoPlaces v3 & import them to GeoPlaces v4

Support

Tips & Tutorials

Export listings and city data from GeoPlaces v3 First download the latest version of GeoPlaces v3 from the member area and update your existing GeoPlaces 3 theme.
