Wpdesigner.com fame Small Potato needs no introduction among WordPress community. A year back, his wordpress blog was #1 on wordpress topic and he have really contributed a lot via his tutorials & wordpress themes. Best thing about him is, he thinks about every little pixel and theres not a single element in his design without purpose. We requested him to design a different kind of magazine theme which he graciously agreed to and created wonderful magazine theme design. Wait no more, here’s the Reinvent theme for your blog.

Magazine Theme release notes by Small Potato

Yet another magazine theme, but this one is different and actually useful? I hope so. When Templatic approached me with the task creating a new magazine theme, I asked myself, “is there room for another one?” After doing some research and looking at the current selection of WordPress magazine themes, the answer is yes, there is.

There’s room for a theme whose layout features aren’t based on guess work and Javascript effects. Something that has the magazine look and feel to it, but simple, useful, and easy to set up. I wanted to avoid yet another fancy and complicated layout, avoid designing a new theme just for show, which is great to look at, but difficult to use after purchase.

Most magazine themes requires multiple images, custom fields, and complicated theme options for main categories and sub categories to set up the front page, Reinvent is designed to let you do all that, optionally. That’s the key here. While most magazine themes requires you to do this, this, and that for set up, which is more difficult to install than WordPress itself, Reinvent is easy to use and set up without loosing the magazine look, feel, and features.

Beyond ease of use, Reinvent isn’t lazy. Take a look at other magazine themes and compare their inner page designs with their front page designs. While the front pages are decked out with fancy layout features and Ajax effects, the inner pages are often neglected with not much attention given to texts, images, post meta data, and especially the comments template.

Reinvent is easy, simple, and complete. If it isn’t, blame Bhavesh! Ah… I kid, I kid. Seriously, thanks to Bhavesh and Templatic for giving me the opportunity to add simplicity to the often complicated magazine theme.

  1. Theme looks great, well done SP and Bhavesh. Some details that could make it better:

    - None of the images link to their posts
    - The reply to comments could use wp_enqueue_script( ‘comment-reply’ ); and also styling a bit of: http://www.jepson.no/u/d6jxov.png
    - No suckerfish? This is a *must* for pages and categories according to users of magazine themes
    - Don’t really see what the inner page detail fuzz is about ;) Are you talking about print/social buttons?

Anyway, great design, always been a fan of SP’s subtle elegance ;)

    • Thanks for your input Magnus, As always, your inputs improves the theme for sure.
      - images now link to their posts
      - improved the styling of “comment reply”
      - Suckerfish is already there, we just missed to add sub categories under demo. Added some categories and you may check the drop down in action now.
      - By innerpages, he meant that he also designed Archives, and inner pages. Nope, print/social buttons are not just the things but if you don’t count woothemes, other themes does not pay much attention to details page.

I appreciate your input that have added value to Reinvent theme for sure. Thanks

  2. Bhavesh,

    Two questions…

Was this theme coded and designed by SP or just designed?

I like the breadcrumbs. StudioPress is good about including breadcrumbs. Is this a plugin or is this featured coded into the theme?

    Great release, Bhavesh!

  3. The theme coding is done by Us. SP provided designs.

We use the same breadcrumb plugin but it is already built in into our themes. you may turn on/off the breadcrumbs via our theme options panel.

Thanks for the Kind words. Now on, we will focuse on a different direction with better quality code. Expect another theme release in about a week.

  4. Although it needs a few adjustments, nice job coding this theme man. Btw, I like the potatoes in the banner.

  5. thematic designing is awsome!
