How To Start A Successful Online Store & Optimize It?

Updated on By

One of the things that the COVID-19 pandemic taught us is that eCommerce is an industry that can thrive in almost all situations. So if you are thinking of starting an online store, you can rest assured that it is a viable idea.

Although there are 7.1 million online stores globally, you can still have your own space online and thrive.

However, it’s one thing to have an online store, and it’s another thing to optimize it. Most online stores go out of business in the first year with little or no profit. The primary reason for this is poor optimization.

This article will discuss all you need to know before starting a successful online store and optimizing it.

Practical Steps to Start an Online Store in 2021

Starting a new online business comes with a lot of processes, challenges, and thrills. In addition to the passion for starting your business, you should have everything you need as well.

The same applies when you want to start an online store. Here are some practical steps you need to take to start an online store in 2021

#1. Set the Right Foundation

The first step to take when you want to start an online store and start selling online involves laying the right and lasting foundations. To begin with this step, you need to make a proper business plan to guide your future business online and offline.

You don’t necessarily have to be a business administration guru to build a comprehensive business plan. Here are some of the components and questions your business plan should have:

  • Before you start an online store, you need to figure out your online store or company’s description. Is it a sole proprietorship, who is responsible for running it, and if you have partners, what are their obligations to the business?
  • What products will your online store be selling online? Where will you source these products from? What are their prices? What are the main product lines? How long does your product last or take to expire?
  • In addition to your online store address and domain name, what physical locations will you operate from? Who are your management and staff? Who supplies your products? What are your storage spaces and shipping providers?
  • Conduct a thorough market analysis to know how often people buy your chosen products. The three main sub-analysis to conduct are competitive analysis on your rivals; audience segmentation to know their demographics; industry analysis to figure out its growth history and potential.
  • What are your marketing strategies before and right after you start your eCommerce website? This should cover public relations, SEO, social media, email marketing, customer loyalty, and promotions. All of this should be studied and enhanced on time to improve patronage.
  • What are your financial strategies for the business? And how do you intend to pay for web-hosting, warehouse rents, shipping fees, advertising costs, marketing services, employee wages, and every production cost?
  • What is your executive summary? It involves stating the objectives, mission statement, summary of growth, product information, and founding date of your online store.

When you’re done giving answers to these questions, you could always go back to your business plan for guidance as you build your online store!

#2. Find the platform to host your online store

Once you’ve set the right foundation for your online store, the next step is finding an e-commerce platform to host it on. Since this is a very critical step to take before you start selling online, you’ve got to review your choices and weigh all alternatives.

There are many great platforms to choose from when starting an online store; it all depends on your needs. While some are dedicated to fast-growing businesses, others are there if you need to keep things modest. Some online store builders offer paid plans and a free trial to assist you to build your site right. However, a good e-commerce platform should have the following:

  1. A comprehensive library of professional but aesthetically looking appearance
  2. Shopping cart add-ons to add products while shopping, and useful plugins
  3. Good mobile support for responsive design
  4. Technical Help and support that come on time.

In all, your choice should come down to the type of product you sell, and whatever platforms give you the most freedom in customization.

#3. Get a befitting hosting plan for your online store

Your online store will need a customer database, shopping cart software to add products to while shopping, and your product catalogue. For this reason, your hosting plan needs to have the right bandwidth and enough storage space. Also, make sure it supports whatever shopping cart software you use on your site.

As a good starting point, try to choose plans with at least 10 GB monthly bandwidth and 2 GB worth of disk space. This will give enough space to store all your data and make customers’ access to your products seamless. We recommend using Bluehost for hosting your websites. It has a reputation of being a reliable service provider over the years, and has some very affordable pricing packages to let you choose from.

#4. Buy a domain name

A domain name is whatever address people type on their browser to get to your online store. Every online store or an online business should have a unique, short, and catchy domain name. With around 366.8 million registered domain names in the world currently, you’d have to make yours pretty unique.

A domain name is gotten for a fee, and this fee varies with the extension. The best domain you should look out for is the “.coms.” Your customers will find them easy to recall. Some site-building platforms can also help you pick a unique domain name.

#5. Build Your eCommerce website

After buying your unique domain name, you should look to set up your eCommerce website. Some eCommerce store builder offers you the option of automatically designing your online store with artificial intelligence.

You could also begin with a pre-set template and customize it to your taste. Some templates may have almost everything you need to start your store. Whatever choice you go with, ensure you don’t go overboard by following these guidelines:

  • Simple and Neat: Do not make the mistake of cluttering your eCommerce website with all your products. From your homepage, theme down to your product pages, they all should be kept simple. Make the layouts in such a way that potential customers are first exposed to your more popular products.
  • Product Names and Description: Add a unique product name and product description for each of your products on your online store. Keep them simple, straight to the point, and unique with clear and bright images to match.
  • A Contact and About Us page: Your contact page is there for customers to reach you quickly when they have enquiries. Make sure it is simple and concise to start with. Add an email address, contact forms, phone number, and physical address. Your site’s bio should be brief and interesting enough that it resonates with your customers.

After that is done, you should connect your unique domain name to your eCommerce website site. Next, you need to start adding certain components that will allow you to sell products on the internet. Some of these components are:

  • Your products: In adding your product to your eCommerce platform, you will need to name them. If available, you can add them to a collection, write their product description, prices they sell for, and add images.
  • Payment methods: Here, you can decide the acceptable payment methods that your customers can use when buying products on your online store.
  • Shipping regions: This involves determining the regions you can ship your product to and their corresponding shipping fares.

#6. Add Secure Socket Layer (SSL) certificate to your website

Securing your eCommerce website is a crucial part of setting it up. Every day, an average of 30,000 new websites are hacked on the internet, with most of them belonging to small business owners. Your customers will trust you with their private details, like their credit card numbers. This is why you must protect them from internet hackers and eavesdroppers.

Adding an SSL certificate to your eCommerce website is a great way to restrict these internet bad guys from accessing customer’s information. SSL certificates are internet connections that secure your internet connections and protects sensitive data sent between two computers.

Data sent from your customer’s browser to your eCommerce website will be scramble by encrypted algorithms. This makes it impossible to read by hackers. Adding an SSL certificate attaches HTTPS to the URL of your online store. You will usually see a lock symbol on the browser bar, next to a protected website.

#7. Set up payment gateways

Setting up payment gateways will help make the customer experience smoother on your website. With covid-19 re-enforcing the need for more contactless purchases, your online store definitely needs a payment gateway.

A payment gateway is a technology that online stores use to accept debit or credit card payments from their customers. A POS can act as a payment gateway for a physical store when you sell your product online.

However, in eCommerce, they are checkout portals your customers can use to enter their credit or debit card details. When you integrate payment gateways into your eCommerce website, it also helps protect your customers during transactions. It encrypts sensitive and personal credit card details, keeping you far from the risk of fraud.

Asides from credit and debit card options, you should also make sure third-party payment methods are available. Most of your customers, especially those overseas, may prefer making payments with alternate paying methods like PayPal, Amazon Pay, and Stripe.

#8. Start selling

The next step involves you to start selling. If you’ve customized your website, set up security and payment gateways, uploaded your products, the next step should involve making sales. This is where you decide when to launch your online store and when you need to start taking orders.

But before your online business goes live, you need to go through your website one more time. Doing this helps you find out typographical errors, mistakes in your links, and any other error from uploading your product. It would generally help if you looked out for anything that may cause issues for your customer’s shopping experience in your store.

Subsequently, you may want to take out time to run some tests through the eyes of a customer. Navigate through your pages, place orders, try to use the payment gateways and shopping carts, and fix whatever faults you find on the site.

The final thing to do, to start making hitch-free sales is to open your eCommerce website to potential customers by going live. Changes made to your domain name system (DNS) settings will help set your online store to appear live. Once such changes have been made, depending on your hosting company, it may take up to twenty-four or even forty-eight hours for the changes to show.

#9. Promote your eCommerce website

The next step requires you to grow your business online. A great looking eCommerce website with lots of nice products will mean nothing if potential buyers don’t know it exists. This is why you need to promote your eCommerce website and grow your business with diverse online marketing campaigns. Some of the marketing tools you can use as you start selling include:

In all, blogs are a unique way to maintain your online presence and keep customers. As a best practice, make sure you link your blog to your eCommerce website via links.

6. Social Media Campaigns:

Social media marketing is considered much cheaper and easier to use than most traditional marketing. With lots of following and great consistent content, you can use social networks to pull traffic and potential customers to your online store business. But first, you need to make sure you have a separate page for your online store and connect it via links to your eCommerce platform. You can then decide to run paid, targeted ads like Facebook ads, YouTube Advertising, or Instagram For Business. You can offer promotions as well. Remember that the purpose is to communicate with your existing and potential customers and increase interest in your products.

7. Email Marketing:

Emails are one of the most effective marketing tools in recent times. As a best practice, your emails need to be as conversational and well-written as possible. It should be frequent, useful, and creative enough to keep the customer interested. These are some of the tools you can utilize in email marketing:

  • PrestaShop designs are largely lacking in professional touch.

#11. OpenCart

If you’re looking to use a free, open-source platform to build your online store, you should consider OpenCart. OpenCart gives a modern approach when you create an online store with them. They have lots of flexibility and customizable features.

The platform has a pool of about 13,000 extensions to help you build your business online. OpenCart also provides users with a support plan that is priced at $99 every month. There’s a one-time-fix plan going for the same price as well. These are some of its main features:

  • Addition of price to each table and definition of a pricing cycle.
  • Free one theme compatibility.
  • Manage CSS from back-end
  • Managing language translations via back-end
  • Linking the pricing table with the product or any external link.
  • URLs that are SEO friendly.
  • Enabling or disabling pricing table and pricing page.
  • Using drag and drop to manage the order of features list.
  • Installation support to help customers understand and use the extension.

Pros

  • Numerous add-ons are available for free.
  • OpenCart’s store builder makes it easy to manage your online store with thousands of themes and social media integration.
  • With multilingual features, your online store can become an international brand, no matter how small.
  • Freedom to use your desired method of shipping

Cons

  • Customizing some features can be really difficult.
  • The cost of commercial features is high, especially for a smaller store.
  • Importing an inventory list for your products can be challenging because the SQL database isn’t easily amendable once you upload goods.
  • There’s the issue of canonization for SEO as OpenCart may create several duplicate pages during designing.
  • Checking out is really slow.

Best SEO Practices For Your eCommerce Site

Having a well-built eCommerce website may not be valuable if you don’t utilize the various pages’ SEO potential. However, should you choose to DIY, there are some useful tips and SEO best practices to follow:

  1. The first thing to know about SEO is that it uses important keywords that are frequently searched in your niche or line of business. There should be relevant keywords placed strategically from the URL of your pages down to every page on your online store. However, you may be writing for the search engine to optimize. It is equally important you write what your customers will understand. Avoid what is known as keyword stuffing; placing too many keywords on a page to increase SEO ranking.
  2. Make sure whatever content you put out on your website is of superior quality and free from fluff. You should also take out time to study and understand your audience and potential customer’s needs.
  3. Connecting your eCommerce platform’s different pages through internal links will keep your visitors engaged and longer on your online store. Doing this will make each page relevant to your users and visitors. You could also use links to direct users to your more important and priority pages.

Worldwide, eCommerce is now pegged to be worth $3.914 trillion and is only expected to grow, led by Asia-Pacific, North America, Europe, Latin America, and the rest of the world according to eMarketer.

As far as business opportunities go, there’s nothing bigger than eCommerce. WooCommerce — the omnipresent free plugin for eCommerce — is your default choice. On top of that, there are several different options available depending on specifically what you’d like to achieve.

According to Kinsta, WooCommerce powers 22% of the top 1 million eCommerce sites in the world. It powers over 70 million WordPress e-Commerce shops, and 22% of the top 1 million sites using eCommerce technologies.

Like WordPress, WooCommerce is also free to use, but you’ll have to pay if you want to use any of the 300+ WooCommerce extensions that provide extra functionality, such as product variation swatches and the ability to sell subscriptions.

Would you like to Launch your own eCommerce store? Your Entrepreneurial journey is in for a treat if you consider WordPress for e-commerce. With nothing more than your basic WordPress website and WooCommerce, eCommerce is only a few clicks away from fruition.

WooCommerce For eCommerce

WooCommerce was first released in 2011 by two developers: Mike Jolley and James Koster. Later, WooCommerce and WooThemes (the company that created WooCommerce) were both purchased in 2015 by Automattic — the same company behind WordPress itself.

At the time, there was nothing like WooCommerce: it was easy to use, free, and it could literally power up your eCommerce with a few clicks. WordPress made for a compelling choice, and using WooCommerce for your online store was an easy no-brainer.

On top of the WooCommerce as a standard option for your online store, today, you have several other ways to create eCommerce stores with WordPress. You have dedicated eCommerce plugins (some free, some paid), completely stand-alone businesses that integrate with WordPress, or SaaS applications that help you run eCommerce stores without really getting involved with WooCommerce. ECommerce store building options today are far too many, to say the least.

Depending on what you want to do with eCommerce, WooCommerce also has several WooCommerce Extensions available such as WooCommerce Subscriptions, WooCommerce Bookings, Automate Woo, and several others. you also have the option of several options for specific business types, as follows:

Depending on WooCommerce for your site seems logical if you consider the fact that almost everyone else in the world defaults to it.

Why WooCommerce?

There are several other reasons why you might want to consider going with this eCommerce store set up as a default:

  • WooCommerce — as far as basic usage goes — is free to use and comes with several extensions and plugins (including third-party plugins) to ensure that you could possibly run any kind of business (from blogs and simple eCommerce to subscriptions, memberships, online directories, and more).
  • The huge popularity and the dramatic use of WooCommerce by around 42% of all other eCommerce sites in the world.
  • The easy availability of various Woo commerce extensions, plugins, and WooCommerce themes available for use for ecommerce.
  • One-click integrations with several other third-party ecommerce plugins, apps, and tools to cover the rest of your ecommerce business.
  • Easy and quick access to help and customer support for your online store (if and when you need it) thanks to the abundance of WooCommerce specialists, WordPress developers, and even agencies that specialize in WooCommerce. Makers of individual plugins and WooCommerce itself also provide customer support when you need it.
  • If you ever have a need to scale up and grow, WooCommerce easily allows you to do so without breaking a sweat.
  • With WordPress and WooCommerce, you get complete control of your online store’s design while not having to reinvent the wheel. You’ll also retain control on integrations and more.
  • Since you are using WordPress as the CMS, you’ll also have an easier time to power up your eCommerce store and prepare for Inbound marketing — which includes blogging, SEO, social media, email marketing, paid advertising, using sales funnels or landing pages, and even marketing automation.

WooCommerce: How to Start With eCommerce, The Easy Way?

Assuming you want to skip the trouble of having to choose between several thousand eCommerce plugins and other plugins built to integrate with WooCommerce (not to mention other apps and tools that help), we’ll stick to basic WooCommerce setup running for now.

We are also assuming you are taking the route of eCommerce to sell physical products or digital products. Your WooCommerce setup only pertains to one-time transactions (for physical and digital products).

At this juncture, it’s also assumed that you have necessary design assets such as your logo. We are also skipping the part where you’d have to choose from some of the best WooCommerce themes you could get your hands on.

Step 1: Setup WordPress, Choose Your Theme and Add The WooCommerce Plugin

Depending on where your website is hosted, you can set up WordPress on your domain in just a few clicks (even one-click installations are a possibility). Once you’ve set up your content management system, picked a theme for WooCommerce, eCommerce is as simple as adding the free WooCommerce WordPress plugin to get started.

You’ll also want to customize your WordPress installation a bit. Here’s a guide on basic customization for your WordPress website.

If you are a small business owner, and if your time is too valuable to be wasted on installation or if you are new to WooCommerce or the content management system itself, you can also choose to use our exclusive WordPress theme installation service.

WooCommerce Themes

When it comes to pre-designed themes and templates, WordPress has one of the vast collections. It is easy to find a niche theme for creating a WooCommerce store with WordPress.

There are themes with different designs, and different features. Moreover, if the WordPress theme is WooCommerce based, you can simply use the addons and to add new features to your online store without having to spend hundreds of dollars.

You can also choose the type of theme you want, since there are plenty of options. There are themes with page builder, to let you easily design pages with drag and drop options, while there are some simpler themes that will fulfil its purpose, but the options available are limited.

Therefore, based on your requirements you can choose an ideal WooCommerce based eCommerce theme. There are WordPress themes for selling downloadable products, for creating a business website with eCommerce features, or a blog with a small storefront, etc. All these themes are generally built around WooCommerce and you won’t even have to download and install WooCommerce separately or spend time with unnecessary setup process.

Due to the intense competition in the theme market, the themes are professionally designed and come with ample features at a very affordable price. They generally also include theme support that enables store owners to contact the theme developers through email and ask for help when required. Besides the premium themes, there are also a number of free themes available that you can use for trail basis to get familiar with WordPress and WooCommerce options.

Step 2: Enable eCommerce: WooCommerce-driven Physical & Digital Product Sales

After setting up WordPress, choosing an appropriate WooCommerce specific theme, and the preliminary WooComerce Set up, and your payment options activated (this only relates to one-time payments on your site) you have a decision to make: Are you selling physical products with one-time payments enabled or are you selling digital products?

Using WooCommerce to sell physical goods and digital products is as easy as sending an email.

For physical products, you’d have to set them up as such from WooCommerce plugin settings. Note that you’d have to also have to add additional details while you create products such as weight, size, variants (if any), shipping options, and more. If you are promoting your physical products, you’d also have to specify retail price and sale price separately

Would you like to sell Product Add-ons (such as gift wrapping, upselling, Shipping options or integrations, and more) while selling your physical products? Use the Product Add-ons WooCommerce Extension from WooCommerce.

As with most online stores, WooCommerce allows you to add shipping details, inventory details, link other products (to create bundles), and more.

Selling Digital Products with WooCommerce

For Selling Digital Products with WooCommerce, all you have to do is to specify that you are selling digital goods (such as downloads, for instance).

Go to WooCommerce > Settings > Products > Downloadable Products, select a download method, enable access restrictions for your products, and more.

Here are the detailed instructions on how to use WooCommerce to Sell Digital Products and a list of WordPress Themes for Digital Products.

Note: When we say digital products, we mean products that can be downloaded or your customers can get access to links (which in turn lead to the digital product they signed up for). You could sell eBooks, artwork, illustrations, reports, templates, plugins, software, music, videos, and so much more.

If you’d like to sell anything other than physical goods or digital products, enabled by one-time transactions built on top of standard WooCommerce, read on:

Sell Subscriptions With WooCommerce

Membership sites are an all-inclusive, community-based approach to selling products and services which require a monthly fee for membership access.

Meanwhile, if you’d just like to sell products (physical or digital) using WordPress with nothing more than an option for your customers to place recurring orders for your digital goods or physical goods, you’d want to consider selling subscriptions.

WordPress enables you to use specific WooCommerce extensions or plugins for Subscriptions too. The popular choice is the WooCommerce Subscription Plugin if you are using WordPress. However, there are several other options to enable subscriptions on WordPress.

Here are the Top alternatives to The WooCommerce Subscription Plugin.

Sell Memberships

Starting a membership site lends itself to an awesome eCommerce model. It particularly appeals to a type of business that promotes exclusivity to a community, continuously adds value to the membership itself, and provides ongoing resources, training or support.

Selling memberships calls for a little more than the straightforward eCommerce business models discussed above. To create a membership site on WordPress, Powered by WooCommerce, you’ll need a robust membership plugin.

You’ll also need a little more work when it comes to the design, the setup, and the functionality of your membership site.

While the actual set up and build for your WordPress membership site differs (according to your business itself, the front-end design or template used, and more), here are the usual steps you’d have to take to get your WordPress membership site ready:

  • Get your domain, your hosting, and the basic WordPress setup (with the WooCommerce WordPress plugin Installed)
  • Choose your preferred Membership Plugin. Pick your choice from any of these Membership plugins to get started.
  • Set up your membership levels (starting from free to paid membership accounts). Access to your membership plans is managed from inside any of the several membership plugins for WordPress. Except for your free membership tier (which needs a free sign up), all other membership access levels will be restricted to paid members on your WooCommerce store.
  • Choose your payment options and then add your payment method. From inside your membership plugin settings, choose the payment gateway option you’d want to use. Note that most WordPress membership plugins directly integrate with WooCommerce.
  • Design a pricing page on your site so that your potential customers can see what they get for each price level of your membership tiers.
  • Create and restrict members-only content whether it’s downloadable files, blog posts, videos, or other resources. You’ll have to specify which content is available to the various membership levels you created above.

The membership site business model usually translates itself into a recurring revenue-generating eCommerce option for you.

Sell Tutorials Or Online Classes

Have skills? Love to teach? You should seriously consider selling online courses or tutorials online. According to Research & Markets Online courses Statistics 2020, the online education market is pegged to reach US$350 billion by 2025.

Making money off selling online courses is a lucrative business with the added benefit of fat profit margins (since you technically only need your skills, knowledge, and the ability to create courses online).

Selling online courses is one of the many ideas as a spin-off from the main category of selling digital goods but it’s not limited to individuals alone.

Small businesses can also launch courses as a great way to boost their lead generation efforts. Self-employed freelancers and professionals can use online courses as a way to establish authority, and mid-size to large businesses can use online courses as a direct pathway for training and continuous education.

To start selling tutorials on your WordPress website, you’d have to deviate from your usual WooCommerce set up, of course. To start with, you’ll need the basic WordPress setup, a relevant WordPress theme for education as far as the front end design goes, and a dependable LMS plugin.

Your choice of WordPress LMS plugin integrates directly with a relevant WordPress LMS theme for courses or education and integrates with WooCommerce (other integrations with payment gateways also exist, just in case).

Need help trying to find the best WordPress themes for education or for online courses? Here’s a gigantic list of 60+ Education Themes.

Sell & Monetize Directories

The days of all-purpose, general, anything-can-do portals like Yahoo, BOTW (Best of the Web), and Spoke portals. Classified sites and online directories are all but gone. While some of these directories still exist (and hold value), it’s a beaten path that you’d do better to stay clear of.

Creating directories with WordPress doesn’t just have to be what it sounds like, though; it doesn’t have to be limited to an online classified site, for instance.

You could get really creative with directory website if you start thinking of this as a collection of items (images, videos, text, and more) driven by a powerful and flexible CMS like WordPress.

For instance, you could rebuild and replicate the likes of Airbnb or ProductHunt. Or you could build niche directories in industries such as Real Estate like Romain Gelez did with Best Deals Punta Cana. Perhaps you could launch and grow a niche, well-defined Job board.

Creativity is the name of the game when it comes to building a business with WordPress directories (while all the good sense of launching businesses will apply).

WooCommerce Add ons & depenedent Plugins

Many add ons and plugins are developed based on the WooCommerce plugin. All these free and paid addons are developed to add a specific features to your eCommerce sites. For instance, there are plugins to help you with complex and vital functions like cart abandonment, while there are simpler WooCommerce add ons to let you add simpler features. For example: An Add on eCommerce plugin to add the feature of wishlist, or save as favorite, a payment gateway or a product page image zoom feature, or even to add new promotional strip to the top of your website to capture visitors’ attention.

All these addons are really useful and ensure flexibility when using WooCommerce as your eCommerce platform. Even the most popular, premium eCommerce platform like Shopify- follow the same model. You can easily add more features to your WooCommerce based eCommerce website, just find and add new add on.

In future, you can grow your eCommerce business with experience and therefore, flexibility is must. And use WooCommerce for your eCommerce store, add these free and paid add ons, try different things according to different situations and create a fully functional eCommerce website with the help of WooCommerce.

WooCommerce plugins and Add-ons

Payment processing through WooCommerce

WooCommerce is the handsdown one of the best options for integrating payment processing feature into your WordPress website. People use WooCommerce, not just for setting up an e commerce website, but also for facilitating the visitors to pay online through their website.

Since WooCommerce supports both, physical as well as digital products, the eCommerce platform for WordPress can be used to sell intangible products like tickets, pass, etc. For this, you can even allow different payment gateways for the users, so they can choose according to their convenience.

There are more than 60 add ons including most of the best and popular payment gateways to choose from. Depending on your location, and/or any other factors, you can choose the payment gateways that you want to integrate into your website.

Sell Productized Services

Taking the basic “service” business one level up, you could package your services in a way that you could sell services as products. Selling packaged, pre-defined services (sometimes also offered in different pricing tiers) is known as Productized services by taking the approach of selling products and services on WooCommerce without the need for shipping.

According to Brian Casel, absolutely anyone — individuals, agencies, startups, software companies, and even traditional businesses can provide productized services to their customers. As a “done for you” option, a productized service is an easy path to take if you ever wanted a way to add on top of your billable hours model that’s typical for service businesses.

To succeed with selling productized services, you’d have to start with the right strategy and a suitable product-market fit. It’s best if you can validate your productized service (experience with selling the exact service to your previous customers is validation enough). Once you are ready with your service packages, it’s just a matter of making sure that WooCommerce does all the heavy lifting for you.

Go to WooCommerce settings, add services as prepackaged products (create products as you normally do, and uncheck the box which says “requires shipping”) with clear instructions on what you need from clients to execute or deliver your services. You’ll also have to specify what your customers get in exchange for the price they pay (also depending on the specific packages, product variants, or tiers of service they choose).

Dropshipping With WooCommerce

When you choose Dropshipping as your business, you’d sell physical products (as most eCommerce sites do) but you’d be selling products you don’t create and/or those that you don’t source.

Dropshippers are suppliers (could be retailers, online sellers, or wholesale companies) that’ll ship out products to your customers on your behalf when orders come through on your Dropshipping site.

For all technical purposes, your dropshipping is the same as the typical online store. You’ll still create a regular eCommerce store (complete with your own design, branding, and more).

Dropshipping is a business model that doesn’t require you to hold inventory, deal with shipping, or worry about transportation and logistics. While your dropshipping store on WooCommerce looks, runs and operates like a regular store selling physical goods, you’ll not be dealing with inventory and shipping.

Using WooCommerce for Dropshipping is easy thanks to the availability of plugins such as AliDropShip, WooDropship, and the official WooCommerce DropShipping extension that are much like add-ons to your dropshipping eCommerce store.

Print On Demand (POD) With WordPress

Print On Demand (POD) is a derivative of Dropshipping with several changes to the way it operates from traditional dropshipping.

To begin with, your Print On Demand business depends on only selling inventory that the Print On Demand supplier you’ll work with (such as t-shirts, hoodies, mugs, and more). Note that these products are plain and come without any design imprinted on them.

To run your Print On Demand business, you’d need to define a specific target audience (startup founders, women who work from home, etc.) and then create designs (that’ll match the products available) to help develop a set of products that are a great fit for the target market you select.

Once you add your design to a product (such as a t-shirt), you are ready with your products which could then be ported over to your WordPress Print On Demand site easily). From this point on, it runs and functions like a WooCommerce powered e commerce website.

How to create a Print on Demand website?

The Print On Demand with WordPress and WooCommerce is easy enough to get started thanks to several WordPress plugins, WooCommerce extensions, and third-party apps available.

Printify, for instance, is a Print On Demand supplier. To start with Printify, all you need to do is to create an account with Printify, connect your WooCommerce powered store, create your designs, and add your products. When a customer purchases your products, Printify takes care of printing the actual product and then shipping it to your customers.

Another popular Print On Demand supplier is Printful which also allows you to run your WooCommerce store with direct integration.

Pre-requisites for WooCommerce based eCommerce sites

WooCommerce and WordPress are both free. But you will need a safe hosting environment as well as a good domain name to represent your website. Besides, for secure payments you will also need an SSL certificate and a secure payment processor.

So, considering the free eCommerce platform in form of WooCommerce, you may want to invest in following for your WooCommerce online store.

1) Hosting space & Domain name

Unlike other eCommerce options that are self hosted, WordPress requires you to acquire your own hosting space and domain name.

For example: Shopify is a self hosted eCommerce platform. But it isn’t technically free. The cost is included in the monthly fee. The difference with WordPress is, you are in fact free to choose the best service, or use the hosting space you already own.

There are so many affordable, secure and fast web hosting options available that choosing and procuring one is simple. We always recommend Bluehost to our users for their WordPress WooCommerce requirements since there are special packages for eCommerce WordPress websites.

2) A Good WordPress Theme

First of all, you will need a beautiful e Commerce theme for starting your WordPress based online store. A good eCommerce website template based on WooCommerce is not hard to find. Based on your requirements, you can browse through this list of WordPress eCommerce themes, and start with your website.

Or you can choose from Themeforest themes collection where there are a lot of affordable themes with different styles and features. There are so many options to choose from so we recommend you to sit down with a pen and notepad and make a list of all the features that you want in your eCommerce website.

Once you have a clear idea of what you want and how you want your website to be, you can do a little bit research about the tools/features to make it happen and choose a WordPress theme that supports all those features or at least support them.

3) WordPress plugins & Addons

Besides a WordPress theme, you may need some additional plugins for your WordPress based e commerce websites. For instance, a good contact form to start with, an SEO plugin, or a WooCommerce add-on, some addons for payment gateways, etc.

While most of these plugins and add-ons are free, you may also need to get some premium addons, to extend the existing features or to add a new feature to your website.

You can just install WooCommerce and start with your online shop right away. But over time you may need new features and that’s when you would want to add new WooCommerce plugin addons.

4) Security

Since an eCommerce website, you would like to ensure that your customers can interact with your site in a safe environment. Especially with the rising risk of online transaction fraud and information stealing, it is vital that you ensure total security of your registered users as well as casual visitors.

For this, you can use different security plugins, or rely on the best security services like Sucuri, Malcare, etc. Besides, it is now essential to make a site that is secure, and for that you will need an SSL security certificate.

There are different ways through which you can ensure the security of your online store and one of them is to make sure that the plugins and theme you are using are all safe and secure. Some plugins are very useful but they should only be downloaded and installed on your eCommerce platform if they are from reliable sources.

5) WooCommerce backup

Backups are life savers in times of crisis. Whether yours is a business website or an eCommerce one, there are chances of data loss on the internet.

The causes can be technical issues or security issues where your site data is compromised. In such circumstances, you can confidently remove the damaged copy of your website and restore the latest backup version to resume the services of your site without affecting your end users.

Especially when it comes to an eCommerce website, backups are essential because unlike business sites, there is a large number of data on an eCommerce website. There are different parts of website that should be protected.

  • The inventory data, the products, the quantity, etc.
  • The order details, order to be fulfilled, refunded, etc.
  • The transaction details for the corresponding orders
  • The user information, saved cards, phone numbers, address, and other preferences

Similarly, there can be a lot of information that you cannot afford to loose as an eCommerce website owners. On the other hand, it is also a waste to lose your visitors to an unavailable webpage. So the restoration & repair period can be minimized with the help of backups.

Many hosts come with a facility for backups, or you can rely on a specialized backup service for your website. Such a service will allow you to set a trigger for automatic backup at the defined duration. Therefore, you can rest assured, focus on your eCommerce strategies and other important aspects of your website.

Is WooCommerce ideal for eCommerce?

WordPress is a CMS built for blogging, so should you use WordPress + WooCommerce to create an eCommerce website?

Many of our clients have similar questions. A lot of people are unsure about choosing WooCommerce, considering there are so many dedicated platforms for creating store website.

However, depending in your requirements, you can choose a right platform for creating eCommerce websites.

When to use WooCommerce?

WooCommerce definitely a very efficient and useful plugin. Especially, if one of the below mentioned criterion matches your situation, you should definitely use WooCommerce:

You already own a WordPress website

If you already have a website of ownership, based on WP, and do not wish to switch the platform, you should go for WooCommerce to extend the features of your existing website. So you will already have a hosted live website, with audience and you can use it to generate leads on your eCommerce website too.

Moreover, you also have the experience and familiarity of knowing WordPress, so there’s no need of going elsewhere.

Your requirements are too low

Often when you are trying to create a small but fully functional eCommerce website, the dedicated eCommerce platforms will look a lot expensive. Under such condition, you can rely on the free WooCommerce and WordPress platform. Ofcourse there are some costs involved (the hosting, add-ons, etc), but it will still be much affordable than the platforms like BigCommerce or Shopify.

When not to use WordPress?

The paid, self hosted, ecommerce website building services are built for those who want an absolute ease of creating and maintaining eCommerce websites. Using them is quite straightforward. Just create an account, choose the type of service package you need, complete the payment. You can then login to your account, choose a theme and start editing it to create your own website.

There is absolutely no setup, no need of procuring different services, no need to look for different add-ons since all the available options are displayed right into the WordPress dashboard, and you can easily search and add.

So those who are not ready to spend a lot of their time and efforts to create & maintain their website, can rely on such eCommerce platforms rather than using WooCommerce.

However, the pricing is always the downside with such platforms. So if it is not an issue for you, you can try such a platform.

WooCommerce Support

WooCommerce is open source ecommerce plugin and it can be used to create a website of almost any kind. However, it is free and there is no direct, guaranteed support with it. However, it is popular so there are many forums and public discussion groups and you can surely find help from them.

Moreover, WooCommerce is well documented which removes almost all the requirements for technical support. There are the steps mentioned and features explained, so there’s not much you may need external help with.

20 Tips For Product Page Design Optimization On Your eCommerce Site

Updated on By

Pay attention to your product page design and there are many small features and improvements that can help you optimize the sales of the products.

Today, if you want to start selling your products online, there are so many options available.

However, the competition is intense and instead of worrying how to create and maintain your eCommerce website, you should think about how to design your product page so as to maximize the sales.

An organized page, with minimal design and clear details about the product will help you build a page that converts better.

The following are the areas in a product page where you can work in order to optimize its performance and conversions:

1)Product Title

The title is ofcourse the most important part of the product page. An efficient title is the one that represents the product in just a few words.

If possible, the title should include the important keywords. For example: The title “Puma Sports Pink Women Shoes for Running” is a title that tells a lot about the product. Just by the title, you can tell that they are running shoes, in pink and for women.

2) Proper images

When you are selling online, the buyers don’t get to touch or see the products in front of them while buying. However, proper product images help visitors get an idea about what the product is.

Use high quality, original and attractive images on your eCommerce website are a must have. You should include images that helps the buyers to get a precise idea of what the product is, it’s dimensions, etc.

3) Insist on including multiple images

product page design - multiple images of products

Just one image per products won’t help. Include multiple images, from different dimensions, with different purpose into your website.

Nowadays, almost all the prominent eCommerce websites insist on providing multiple images for each and every product in their store. Along with an informative description, multiple images, helps the buyers get a better idea of what they are looking at.

4) Also include a video if possible

Videos can surely describe better than images or text. Nowadays, there are product page designs where you can easily include a video as well as images.

The video can demonstrate the use or features of a product. A video can deliver the message more efficiently than any other media. For example: A buyer will surely love to watch a video of a fitness band to know how easy it is to operate, how good it looks on the model’s hand and the other operations.

5) A detailed description

One of the most important parts of the product page is the text description. Images, videos and other graphics are undoubtedly eye catching and helps you capture the visitor’s attention, but text information is equally important.

With the description section, you can provide your visitors with all the details they need for the product. For example: For a Laptop, you can describe the RAM, ROM, Screen dimension, graphic card details, details about the USB type, battery information, and much more. For a kitchen appliance like a sauce pan, you can describe it’s weight, type of material, size, what you can use it for, what you can not use it for, etc.

6) Price

There are so many theories around how to display the price of a product on the product page to optimize the call to action, by creating an emergency.

You obviously don’t have to provide misleading or false information on your website. The most commonly found price format on eCommerce site is the actual price (cancelled with a strike through) followed by the discounted price. This surely helps you sell more.

7)Related products

If you have already got a visitor on a product page, you can make the best of this attention by directing him to other similar products.

This is one of the most common features found on the product pages of some of the most popular and successful eCommerce websites like Amazon, Alibaba, etc. This sections is generally titled “You might also like”, or “people who bought this also liked”, “Commonly bough along with **product name**”, etc.

8) User reviews and ratings

Built trust on your website with social proofs. The visitors will find your products more attractive with user reviews on it.

The visitors on your eCommerce website might find the products more reliable with ratings and reviews on it. They just make your product look more legit and reliable. Whenever possible, also allow image upload with user comments and star ratings.

Today, there are so many ways to make the reviews section way more interesting for the visitors. Shein.com uses a very efficient way for reviews on their apparels.

9) Optimized images for speed

For an eCommerce website having a lot of images, you should also use an image optimization plugin to make sure that all the high quality pictures do not slow down your website.

The speed is a very important factor for any kind of website. Especially when it comes to eCommerce website, a visitor would like to see as many options and as quickly as possible.

Therefore, all your product pages should be well optimized for speed. When the page speed of your product page is not good, the culprit is mainly the images. Especially when you are using multiple, high resolution images. So it is advisable to use optimized product images on your website.

10) Proper shipping details

When selling online, these three details are very important:

  1. Shipping charges : State the shipping charges or if you are offering free delivery
  2. Estimated shipping dates : Tell them the estimated time it might take to ship their product once the order is placed.
  3. Delivery dates: Also, make sure to state a reliable delivery date for the product, and then ensure timely delivery.

These are the basic details that a buyer would be curious about. If any of these details is missing, the buyer won’t be very sure of buying through your website.

11) Size Chart and extras

Give the visitors all the information they need to be ensured that the product they are choosing is the one they need. This can be done by providing proper information as per the requirement.

Make sure there is a proper size chart if it is an apparel website, height and weight information when needed. Therefore, the buyers get the complete information and a satisfactory experience when buying from your store.

12) Create an urgency

There are so many ways to create an urgency on your eCommerce product page. You can tell them about an offer that is about to get over or a deal that is about to reach it’s end.

There are many tools and techniques to create urgency for a particular product, or mass of products on your website. With urgency, your visitors will be inspired to make a quicker decision.

The Urgency can be regarding anything, a limited period sale,  a limited stock, etc. These will prompt quicker user actions but you have to be careful not to make your buyers feel cheated for demonstrating the sense of urgency.

13) Provide proper return information

Returns are an inextricable part of your eCommerce website. Your buyers always need the assurance that they can return the purchased goods if their conditions are not met.

However, there are certain conditions that needs to be mentioned regarding returns, for better clarity. The details like return window, that tells the visitors the number of days after delivery when they can choose to return the purchased product. There can be return conditions, for example, the product should be in unused conditions, the package should contain all the components, the tag shouldn’t be removed, etc.

Also, don’t forget to mention about refund. Make sure your product clearly states how the refund will be processed, once the products are returned by customers, and received back by you.

14) Make sure it is mobile friendly

Obviously, in this age, when the internet is available anywhere and everywhere, people tend to browse more through their mobile phones. For those visitors who want to browse for a product of their need through mobile phone, your website should have a perfect mobile view.

Try viewing your product pages on mobile phone to ensure that all the details are displayed and the order is well planned. Make sure that mobile page loading speed is good too. Also see that the Call to Action works fine and the checkout options are easily accessible when viewed on mobile phones.

15) Buy now & wish list options

Ofcourse your website will have a buy now option to let your visitor immediately buy the product, or the wishlist to let him save the product as a favorite for quick access.

But what matters is how they are displayed and how easy to access they are. There are different ways, according to the structure of your website and the design of your page, to place these options so that they are easily accessible. Also the text you use before such an option matters a lot.

You can use the following eCommerce add-ons to make your online store more interesting and feature packed.

16) Clear Call to Action

Highlight your Call to Action section to draw the user’s attention to the add to cart button, but also make sure not to overdo the design.

A minimal, distraction free design works when it comes to call to action.

17)  Link your images to the variants

A practical product based website will always have product variants. The variable products can have the variants in form of different sizes, colors, etc. You can have an image associated with different color, for example. If there’s a dress available in 4 different colors, you can have 4 different images available for each of those color variant.

This will not only improvise the user experience but also help them see exactly what they are about to buy.

18) Optimize the page for SEO

Each page of your website should be properly optimized for the search engines. Make sure you are targeting the proper keyword and optimizing the content of your eCommerce product page for the same.

You should also SEO optimize your images by managing it’s size, by using proper alt tag, etc. The title and the content of your product page should be built around the keyword, using LSI and other indicators to indicate the value of your page for the particular keyword/product.

19) Speed optimize your product page

Be it a simple blog, or an eCommerce website, a slow page load speed isn’t acceptable. A slow website is annoying for the visitors, and is bad for SEO too.

You can use a tool like Google Page speed Insights to find out flaws in your product page and correct them to make sure the required results are served without making the prospect buyers wait.

20) Content

The content on your product page includes everything you use, the description, the image, the format of the content, how persuasive it is, and its usefulness from the visitors’ point of view.

When a visitors lands on the product page of your online store, the content of the product page should keep him/her hooked to the page. This does not just include persuasive copy writing but also an efficient page structure that keeps the content of priority at the top.

Moreover, you can also rely on blogs and external content to draw your visitors to the product page.

Conclusion

The buyer today is aware and knows almost everything, and the competition is intense. If you fail to provide products, or product information, someone else will.

One technique that always works is being transparent and honest.  When the buyers find your website reliable, they will surely return and like to buy more from your website.

1) Ease of use:

Whether it is a WordPress theme or an eCommerce platform like Shopify, they are all developed for the non-programmers to create their website on their own and therefore are very easy to use. These platforms come with simple, self-explanatory options to let you create amazing online stores. However, eCommerce platforms typically let you start creating your website just by creating an account and logging in. While with WordPress you will have an initial process to install & set up WordPress. However, these processes are really easy and you can easily tackle them without any prior experience.

2) Hosting requirements:

For WordPress-based eCommerce websites, you will need to acquire the hosting and domain name for your website. On the other hand, eCommerce platforms are self-hosted.

3) Payment model:

A WordPress theme is a one-time investment. You can buy and theme and use it forever without paying a renewal fee. There can be extra charges for new updates and support services, but generally, they are annual and very nominal. Whereas, when it comes to eCommerce platforms, the platform fees are charged monthly (and you can surely choose to pay for a longer duration. Extra features are charged separately. Ultimately, Shopify and BigCommerce can be a little bit more expensive than WordPress.

4) Extra features:

One of the best things about WordPress is the availability of abundant WordPress plugins. There are so many different plugins for different features. Some of the best plugins are free and you can easily download them from the WordPress plugin repository. However, eCommerce programs too come with these extra add-ons. They can be free or paid, but the number of options available is not even close to the number of WordPress plugins.

5) Support

WordPress themes generally offer free support for at least 6 months or up to 1 year after purchase. This duration is enough for you to go through the initial setups and get familiar with all the options. In most cases, you will not even need support after that duration. On the other hand, the Shopify fee includes support charges and you can get in touch anytime during the course of your subscription.

Wix vs WordPress – Top 6 Differences

Updated on By

When it comes down to choosing the website builder that’s best for you, you need to consider a few categories.

First is whether to use, WordPress or a Website Builder, then we can look at WordPress vs Wix

What is the difference?

WordPress is a software that enables you to design your website. It is an open-sourced Content Management System, which means anyone can make their own and contribute to it.

(WordPress.org not WordPress.com)

This is a direct reflection of the over 50,000 plug-ins and 11,000 themes.

WordPress is technically not a website builder, but is commonly referred to as one because you can build a website using it’s platform.

It is the fastest growing CMS, with over 500 new sites being built daily in the top 10 million websites on the web.

Wix is a site builder which hosts its own websites, and is said to be one of the largest in the game right now.

Wix are the only ones that distribute the templates and apps available,  and this includes 100’s of options and plenty of customizing features.

Since it is a website builder, the editor is much different than WordPress, which we will get to in more detail later.

So which one is right for you and is Wix better than WordPress or the other way round?

We have narrowed down the categories to look for when comparing these two giants, Wix and WordPress.

Either way you will find something specifically for your needs.

In short, to remember:

Wix = Less Learning Curve, Less Flexibility

WordPress = More Learning Curve, More Flexibility

You can think of building a website like a house:

WordPress allows you to customize the structure, and placement of walls, if you so choose. You can even have it built by someone and just change the aesthetics like the layout of furniture, and paint color.

With Wix, you can’t change the structure of the house, but you can customize the furniture and paint color to what you want. This can ultimately change each website to be completely different.

But let’s take a look at the major categories for deciding between the two:

Interface/Editor

The interface is what you use to edit your website. Pick the one that suits your needs and helps you achieve your goals.

Wix:

The editor for Wix is easy to use, because they pride their business on having a user-friendly system. This is why they are considered one of the best.

Wix achieves this through the simple drag n’ drop editor. This is an instant What You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG) perfect for beginners and life-changeably easy.

The interface is also clean and less cluttered than WordPress, with a sleek design and easy set-up.

Other companies have tried to replicate, but Wix is one of the best at it.

Wix Interface

WordPress:

WordPress has an easy interface, when it comes to not dealing with code, and prides themselves on usability with flexibility and complete customization.

With this comes a back and front end system

The editor is set-up to see the dashboard where you manage the settings, plug-ins and features.

So if you would like to see what the viewer will see, you have to switch from dashboard to demo.

Plug-ins do exist for WordPress that gives it a drag and drop interface such as Elementor,

(WordPress has also recently updated with Gutenberg, which has a block system for more user-friendliness.)

The expand-ability is the main difference between WordPress and everyone else. It simply cannot be matched with the endless possibilities.

WordPress Dashboard

Themes/Templates

WordPress:

Since many third party companies sell themes and plug-ins for WordPress, you can find any type for you specific industry, level, or category.

There’s themes for

Themes include any type of website you can think like business, education, eCommerce, design studios, videos, restaurants; you name it.

My point is, there are a lot of options but Platforms like Themeforest, and EnvatoMarket can make browsing through extremely easy. You can also find great blogs that narrow down themes, review, and list the top themes.

Most themes have the ability to stand large capacity websites with a lot of pages, so it’s idea for large businesses or for those who want to expand for the future.

If you are a beginner it is always a good idea to look at tutorials and tips on the best way to go about installing your theme, and once you know, it’s a breeze to perfect it.

Many themes also come mobile-responsive which saves the trouble of manually adjusting or encountering issues in the future.

WordPress Themes on Templatic

Wix:

Wix has many templates to choose from, that can also be specifically designed for a certain industry. Each have custom features that can be included and altered the way you prefer.

You can always customize the design and use apps to get the template where you want, and they make it easy to make it unique and up to date

But once you choose a template you cannot change to a totally new one

Most of the templates are mobile-friendly but not responsive. You can always rearrange and customize the layout for mobile devices.

Wix Templates

Features: Apps/Plugins

For features we suggest doing research to find out if your website builder has the features you are looking for. These can include many categories such as SEO, security, or online store options.

Wix:

There is an entire App Market for Wix that provides great features, with over 300 apps. This includes specific conventional features such as galleries, events, and online stores.

Wix does not have the same amount of selection with their apps as WordPress plug-ins, which makes it easier to narrow down.

You can have complete confidence in the reliability of the apps and don’t have to worry about compatibility.

If you are looking for non-conventional type features this may not be the best option.

Basically the difference will be whether conventional is  enough for you.

WordPress:

WordPress plug-ins, as you know, have endless possibilities.

Some are already provided to you depending on your hosting site.

Plug-ins can turn your ‘house’ into a ‘mansion’ with top of the line features, and many your probably didn’t even think you needed like:

BlogVault: For backing up your website and migration

Weglot: For translating your website

Malcare: For securing your website

Smush Image: For optimizing your images

Bottom line, the amount and type of plug-ins can get overwhelming so we suggest doing research on the best ones.

It’s a good idea to find a trusted website that will give detailed explanations for the best plug-ins, since many users have issues with compatibility.

Find recommendations so that you don’t end up with plug-ins that are not compatible or not updated.

WordPress Plug-Ins

eCommerce Websites

eCommerce websites have been up and coming for many years and will continue to be a trend in 2019.

If you are one looking into an eCommerce here are a few things to think about.

WordPress:

WordPress has the advantage with the Woo-Commerce plug-in, which is perfect if you are looking to expand your store in the future, and is stacked with features most people didn’t even know existed.

It has multilingual options, full control, and ultimate additional features.

With all WordPress themes and plug-ins there will always be a learning curve and can have some additional charges

Wix:

Wix has an entire section dedicated for online stores, and is a great option for a small store, or an up and coming.

They have one of the best website builders for integrating products, and even engaging your products on social media.

Wix is one of the most affordable when it comes to online stores, but a few key features keep it from being reliable with larger stores, so keep that in mind.

SEO:

Search engine optimization is key to gain traffic for your site. How well will your website show up on Search Engines?

Wix:

Wix has many built in SEO features that allow for great optimizing features.

There have been many negative opinions about the capabilities of the Wix SEO in the past, but they have made many improvements.

Unless you are looking to rank with an extremely difficult keyword, then the SEO for Wix works just fine.

One attribute that does not benefit SEO is with the free plan you cannot customize your domain and it will automatically name your photos.

WordPress:

The beauty of WordPress is that the SEO is as good as the plug-ins that you choose to use.

Plug-ins like Yoast SEO, which has high rankings and unsurpassed features, makes SEO easy for you.

Like everything else with WordPress the options are endless when it comes to SEO and the features that allow for you to show up on search engines are the ultimate against other sites.

Pricing:

Of course your budget is the most important, so it’s crucial to look at all the factors when deciding between builders and CMS.

Wix:

Wix has multiple options starting from-

  • Free: Includes Website with Wix Ads; Doesn’t include Domain Name
  • $5: Connect Domain ; With Wix ads
  • $13: Start with no Wix Ads; plenty of storage
  • $23:  For Business and eCommerce; Online store and premium apps

(There are more options, go to Wix.com for more information)

WordPress:

  • WordPress is Free
  • Hosting can range from: $2 and Up with Bluehost it is $2.95/month and highly suggested for WordPress websites.
  • Themes can range from $0 – $90

In conclusion:

We suggest looking at all factors when deciding which way to go.

Both Wix and WordPress provide great options to build your website.

Wix is easy to use, and has great customization features.

WordPress provides complete flexibility and customization for you.

Which will you choose?

With WordPress and WooCommerce you can create full-fledged, self-managing and feature rich online booking systems, all by yourselves. Check out the must-have features for your online booking system.

Generally, you can use WooCommerce bookings for

  • Online Bookings
  • Appointment booking
  • Table reservations

But, with your creativity and ideas, you can use the options provided by WooCommerce bookings for almost anything. The plugin allows you all the flexibility to create and manage online bookings. Further in this article, we are going to discuss the features that make us recommend WooCommerce Bookings for your online booking engine.

Perks of using WooCommerce Bookings

WooCommerce bookings is one of the most efficient plugins for creating Online WordPress booking systems. The plugin comes loaded with features and flexibility that lets you have full control on how you want to sell bookings. You can also create custom booking and pricing range (More on this in the later sections) when you want to manage availability and pricing for a certain time period during the year.

The following are the best features of WooCommerce bookings that make it the best alternative for creating your online booking systems.

Works with WooCommerce

WooCommerce being the best, free and eCommerce plugin, is everyone’s favorite. If you want to have the features and advantages of WooCommerce with your booking website, the best option you have is using WooCommerce Bookings.

WooCommerce is simple, feature-rich, flexible and very easy to use. All these features are inherited by WooCommerce bookings too.

When you have this plugin installed in your website, you can still add products just like you do with WooCommerce (simply, Products ⇒ Add new). While you set the product details, you will see an additional option that appears after you activate WooCommerce bookings. Select “Bookable product” and then just create the bookable blocks, set the availability and the costs.

So, creating and adding products with WooCommerce Bookings is really easy.

Set the price per block, tax, discount for date ranges

WooCommerce bookings let you create completely automated online booking engines. You simply need to create the bookable block by specifying its time limit and the per block cost. The price on the front end will be calculated automatically based on the selection of the users.

For instance – If the bookable block is of one day each, with a price of $200, and the user chooses to book 12 such blocks, then the price will be automatically calculated as $24oo. You can even set tax rates to be calculated on each sales or discounts.

Unlike the old systems where you had to spend most of the time managing the bookings that you receive online, WooCommerce bookings lets you create a self-manged online booking system. You can just key in the price, taxes, discounts, etc and it will all be applied to the related dates and the payable price will be calculated accordingly.

Here’s a complete guide on how to create bookable products with WooCommerce bookings.

Flexibility for creating bookable blocks

WooCommerce means flexibility. With WooCommerce bookings, you can define if you want the visitors to determine the duration of a bookable block, or you can set a fixed bookable block that the customer can book. For instance – you can create a fixed bookable block of 2 hours for a spa treatment appointment. Or you can let the customer decide how many blocks of 1 day he wants to book for your hotel room.

You can also specify the length of each bookable block in terms of hours, days, weeks or years. This is how WooCommerce bookings ensure that you can create bookable blocks for appointments (in hours) or bookable block for hotels (days and weeks) or for villa rentals (months), etc.

This helps you to create booking website of almost any subject. For instance, by creating bookable block of an hour or two, you can easily create an appointment booking system with WooCommerce bookings.

Choose the maximum number of bookings for a specific time slot

You can define what number of bookings are possible for a fixed time block. For example, you have 10 deluxe rooms in your hotel. So you can allow 10 bookings for that hotel room. When the 11th customer tries to book a deluxe room, he won’t be allowed unless he chooses a vacant time slot.

This feature is very beneficial because it avoids overbooking. If you don’t want to allow multiple bookings for a bookable block, you can simply set 1 as the maximum number of bookings.

Custom range for bookings

If you want to have a number of days in a year where you don’t want to allow booking, you can use the range settings. You can just add range and then select the start date and the end date and then set the criteria for that date range. This is very useful if you want the bookings to be disallowed for a specific time period.

For instance, You want to disallow bookings for your hotel from Jan 15 to Feb 10 this year for renovation and maintenance work. So all you need to do is create a range with start date Jan 15, 2018 and Feb 10, 2018 and set “allow bookings” as “No”. This will make the dates unavailable for booking.

Also read – WooCommerce bookings questions.

Fully automated bookings

There is a variety of WordPress hotel booking themes you can choose from, that allow the visitors to book online . Some of the booking websites need admin intervention for booking confirmation. This kind of system may prove to be inefficient when there are a large number of rooms and booking processing. When the user specifies his requirements, dates, number of persons, etc., a booking request is sent. It important to note that the users can just send a booking request and then wait for the response from the admin.

WooCommerce Bookings is different. You don’t necessarily require a WordPress hotel booking theme for it. You can just grab a WooCommerce compatible theme, and create your booking website.  The user can directly check if there is a bookable slot for his dates. If it is available, he can pay online and get the booking confirmation in real-time. Such systems are more efficient, not only for the visitors to make a booking, but also for the admin. If you are an admin to such website, there’s no need to check on for requests. WooCommerce bookings allow you to create a self-managing online booking system.

Custom price range

Just like WooCommerce bookings allows you to set custom availability, you can also set custom pricing. What if you want to hike the price during a specific time of the year, or what if you want to sell bookings at a discounted price for a week or so?

WooCommerce lets you manage this very gracefully. You just have to select the date range, and then set the price for those dates. For instance – You want to allow the visitors to book rooms at your hotel for 20% off during Christmas. So you can create a range with the start date and end date, and then set the special price for that duration.

The following example shows how you can sell bookings at half the base price within a pre-determined period of time.

The price

WooCommerce bookings is a premium plugin that is available at a $249 with a year of free support and updates. The plugin is short and sweet. A year of free support is enough to understand this plugin and get familiar with its aspects. WooCommerce bookings is a simple plugin that allows you to create booking features with utmost ease. The plugin, is in fact, worth the price you pay. It’s a price that you pay for a fully automated and manageable online booking system, so totally worth it!!

Here are the best reasons to use WooCommerce Subscriptions

To add the subscription feature into your WooCommerce website, WooCommerce is the best alternative. There are many reasons to support this. The plugin is a premium, tested and used widely. Let’s discuss some of the best features that this plugin comes with:

Reliability and Power of WooCommerce

WooCommerce is hands down, the best and most powerful eCommerce plugin for WordPress. For me, it is the first name that comes to my mind when I hear WordPress eCommerce.

It is popular because it is FREE, easy to use, and very flexible. What makes it more proficient is the fact that there are many products (plugin, addons and themes) that are designed around it.

WooCommerce subscriptions is one such extension that integrates with WooCommerce to enable your eCommerce website with the subscription features. So, you get the power and flexibility of WooCommerce and the subscription features of WooCommerce subscriptions. It is designed to sell simple as well as variable products on subscription. Just like WooCommerce, it is feature rich too!! Read on, to find out why it is best for collecting recurring payments.

Good for simple as well as variable subscriptions

Subscription based products can be simple or variable. You can sell simple products or services through WooCommerce subscriptions, similarly, with a little more configuration you can sell variable products as efficiently.

When selling online through WooCommerce, you can add product variations. For instance, you are viewing a shirt that you want to buy online. So the website offers you to choose the color of the shirt from the options available on the product page. You can even select the size variations right on the product’s sales page.

This plugin helps you sell services, downloadable as well as physical goods on subscriptions.

Sign up and free trial

If you are about to provide some service on subscription, WooCommerce subscriptions is the best choice. It lets you define the one time sign up fee when that is to be charged when a user starts using your service. If you don’t want to charge the sign-up fee, that too is possible. You can also provide free trial period to your prospect customers. It is always nice to let your customers try out your service before they sign up for it. Here are a few tips and tricks to create successful subscription websites.

Automatic as well as manual renewal support by WooCommerce subscriptions

The whole concept of subscription is about renewal, that the service/product is sold on a recurring basis. WooCommerce subscription lets you choose if you want to system to automatically charge the subscriber for each renewal till the subscription cycle ends. Or if you just want to inform subscriber and wait for him to take action and pay manually to renew his/her subscription.

Automatic renewals

WooCommerce supports automatic renewals. When automatic renewals are enabled, the subscriptions of your customers will be auto-renewed at the end of the previous subscription period. This kind of renewals don’t require and user action and deduces the subscription amount from the user account to renew the cycle. So the service/product will continue. However, at any point, the user can cancel the subscription and automatic renewals to avoid getting charged in the future.

Manual renewals

This plugin not just lets you accept recurring payments automatically, it also lets you collect payments manually through manual renewals. This feature is useful for the people who want to manually pay for their subscriptions. So, instead of already accepting the payment and automatically renewing the subscription, the user will be sent an email reminder to renew his subscription. The user can then manually pay for the subscription and renew it.

In case, the subscriber fails to pay before the subscription period expires, their subscriptions will be kept on hold. On paying the renewal fee again, they can access their product/service again. So for the manual renewal of subscriptions, the subscriber’s action and manual payment is

Supports a wide range of payment processors

Selecting the payment gateway is one of the most important decisions you will make about your website. When selecting a payment processor, there are many factors you must consider. For instance, here are the things that you should consider while choosing the payment gateway for your subscriptions.

  • Whether the payment gateway supports your currency
  • If it suits the size of your business?
  • Pricing and processing fees?
  • Whether it allows automatic renewals

There are many such things you should consider before choosing a payment gateway. Make this decision wisely because a payment processor directly deals with the financial transactions taking place on your website. Refer this WooCommerce document to find out your ideal Payment gateway.

Easy to use

WooCommerce subscriptions is very easy to integrate into your website. You can install and start using it just like you do with any other WordPress plugins. Once installed and active, an additional tab for subscriptions will be created under the WooCommerce menu.

The only prerequisite that you need to satisfy to using WooCommerce subscriptions is that you should have WooCommerce installed and active. Adding subscription-based products is as easy as adding simple products. For simple subscriptions, you just need to add the subscription price, duration and the cycle time and you’re ready to go. Here is a help article to add simple products for subscriptions.

The process of adding variable products is just a little different. This is because, for such products, you’ll need to specify different subscription prices and other particulars like the tax, duration etc. But that too is simple, with the intuitive options and this guide on how to create variable subscriptions using WooCommerce subscriptions.

Flexible and extensible

WooCommerce subscriptions is not just powerful but flexible too. Basically, it lets you sell simple products as well as variable products using WooCommerce subscriptions, but there’s a lot more to it.

With your ecommerce website, integrated with this plugin, you can get creative. It opens up new opportunities to sell your products and services the way you want. You can sell services, downloadable and physical products using it.

For instance, while selling downloadable products you can decide if you want to allow download only when the payment for the renewal is made. So you can sell pretty much anything. A service, online tutorials, online magazines, or some physical products that are delivered to your customer’s doorsteps at a fixed interval.

For the payment processing too, you can choose from a wide range of supported payment gateways, manual or automatic renewals, set the sales period and the discounted price, etc.

Download and setup WooCommerce Subscriptions

WooCommerce subscription is one of the most popular WordPress subscription plugins. It works with the WooCommerce plugin to allow subscription features in your website.

Whether you want to sell products on your website or just memberships and subscriptions, you need to use this plugin. The WooCommerce plugin is a package of all eCommerce features, it is free and you can download it. To install WooCommerce, follow the simple steps-

1) Login to your WordPress Dashboard

2) Navigate to Appearance ⇒ Plugins ⇒ Add new

3) Upload the WooCommerce installation file (.zip) here

4) Install and activate WooCommerce

WooCommerce acts as a base eCommerce platform upon which WooCommerce subscriptions work. So, once WooCommerce is active you can start using WooCommerce subscriptions anytime to allow subscriptions. The installation and activation process for WooCommerce subscription is same as WooCommerce. Navigate to Appearance Appearance ⇒ Plugins ⇒ Add new and upload the WooCommerce subscriptions zip file.

To create a subscription based website, you must use the WooCommerce subscription plugin. (Read WooCommerce subscription review)

Adding a subscription based product

Once WooCommerce subscriptions is installed and activated, you can start adding products/services that you want to offer on subscription.

We shall learn this with an example. We want to add a product called “Health magazine”. It is a magazine related to health and food that will be delivered to the customers once a week.

Adding new product

Login to your dashboard and find Products menu under the WooCommerce menu. Choose to “Add Product”.

Add the product title, product description

Just like you add the product title/name for any WooCommerce product, you can add the product name and short explanatory text to describe your product.

Tip – Make the best use of the description field to explain your product/service to your customers.

Choose Simple/Variable subscriptions

Below the product description box, you can choose if you want to create a simple subscription product or a product with variable subscriptions. We will start with “Simple subscription”.  Our product is a weekly magazine, so we will classify it as a Virtual product.

Setting up the subscription price, Sign up fee and Free trail period

The next step is for specifying the price, for your subscription. Setting up the subscription package’s price is very simple. All you need to do is to key in the amount you want to price and choose the duration for the validity of the subscription for that amount.

This means that once a visitor subscribes, he will be charged $60, twice a month (every second week) for 6 months. If you want the subscription cycle to repeat until voluntary termination is requested by the subscriber, you can choose “all time” option.

Setting up the free trial period

This is applicable when you are providing software or a service for free. It is always good to let your visitors have a free trial. You can set the days for which the trial period will be valid using the field “Trial period”.

Because our example is for a magazine, there’s no trial period, so we’ve left the field empty.

WooCommerce subscriptions: Sales dates

If you want the visitors to have a discounted rate as a part of your promotional sale session for a particular period, you can schedule the dates here.

Product images

You can set an intuitive product image to represent your product. It is advisable to use high quality product image.

How it appears on the front end?

This is how your product based on subscription will appear on the front end.

Your Subscription website is ready to go with this. Here are a few things you should avoid while maintaining a subscription based website.

Managing your subscriptions

You can manage the subscriptions by navigating to WooCommerce ⇒ Subscriptions. When a subscriber subscribes to products/services, they will appear here. You can even edit the subscriptions from here when the subscribers request changes.

Adding new subscription manually

To add a new subscription, you can navigate to your dashboard, and click WooCommerce to expand the sub-options. An additional sub-menu item “subscriptions” will be added with the successful installation of WooCommerce Subscriptions. Click “Subscriptions”.

When you’ve added subscriptions, the list of all those existing subscriptions will be shown here.

Basic settings (Payment gateway setup)

You need to decide whether you want to allow automatic renewals or manual payment processing at the end of each subscription period. Check the list of the payment gateways that you can use for manual or automatic recurring subscriptions. So you can choose and get the payment gateway that you want to use for recurring payments on your website.

Other plugins for accepting recurring payments

Setup WooCommerce Subscriptions

You can use different types of subscription based website using WooCommerce subscriptions.

To change the settings for WooCommerce subscriptions, navigate to settings under WooCommerce. On installing WooCommerce subscriptions, a new tab will appear at the end. Click that tab to access the options for WooCommerce Subscriptions.

Button text and user roles

1) The first two options will let you change the text on the buttons that appear on the sales page. You can go with the default text or change it as per your requirements.

2) The next option will let you change the default role of a new subscriber. You can choose a suitable role from those available in the drop-down. Similarly, you can also set the role of a subscriber whose subscription is not yet renewed and is inactive.

The roles of the subscribers can be later on managed at Users >> All users.

3) You can choose the type of renewal you want from here. Checking the box with the “Allow manual renewals” will let the subscribers manually pay for their renewals. And it will present you with another option, “Turn off automatic payments”. This will permanently disable the automatic payments for the subscriptions on your website.

4) If you want to allow the users to switch the packages to update or downgrade, you can use the switching feature.

5) You can allow the user to suspend their subscription with this setting. By default, no suspension is allowed. However, you can set the number of times a user will be allowed to suspend his account during a subscription period.

With the Mixed checkout option enabled, the subscriber will able to pay for subscription-based as well as normal products concurrently.

Drip downloadable content enabled will allow the subscriber to download a newly added downloadable file only after the payment for the next renewal is processed.

Conclusion

These were the simple steps through which you can add products/services and start subscriptions using WooCommerce subscriptions. This was about selling simple WooCommerce products that you can let your customers buy on subscriptions. However, with a little more configuration, you can even provide variable products on subscriptions.

Product variations

WooCommerce subscriptions let you manage and display product variations on your ecommerce website. You can present different versions of your product/services at different prices. So the website users can choose from the available options and subscribe to their desired products at the determined price.

Trial period

The trial period of a subscription is where the prospect users can try out the service to know it features and favourability. Most of the services available on the internet allow 10-15 days free trial period where they can evaluate the service. After 15 days the users can decide if they want to continue they’d like to pay the fee and continue using the service.

Sign up fees

Signing up for a product/service means you agree to their terms of use and pay the sign-up fee as the initial charge to get started. The signup fee is a one time fee. You can easily setup your signup fees with WooCommerce subscriptions. However, if you want to allow free sign-up, you can do that too.

Types of subscriptions you can create

The following are the most common type of subscriptions that are offered with the modern WordPress websites.

  1. Membership subscriptions
  2. Product subscriptions (For digital/physical products)
  3. Service subscriptions (For intangible services)
  4. Subscription with automatic renewal
  5. Subscription with manual renewal

With WooCommerce subscriptions, you can create any of these websites that collects recurring payments with the easiest steps. All you need to do is to configure your websites according to your requirements and set the options to collect payments.

Membership Subscriptions

The most popular kind of subscription is membership subscription. These are the kind of websites where the users are required to sign in, in order to gain access to a certain part of the website.

Membership subscriptions, basically refer to the access control of your website. If you want to create a website with some parts that are only accessed by registered users, you can use the WooCommerce Memberships subscription plugin with WooCommerce subscriptions. Both of these WooCommerce add-ons finally create a membership subscription that is renewed after each duration.

Let’s understand this with a simple example – There are some online software systems that allow the access to use their software only to the people who subscribe it. Let’s say an online photo editing software, that allows the members to use their photo editing features if they pay the subscription price. The subscription can be charged on monthly, weekly or yearly. Therefore, the user can subscribe for the required period for a fixed price and get access to the photo editing software.

A casual visitor that comes to the website won’t be allowed to access their advanced editing tools. Such features are generally called “member’s only” features.

Product subscription

Websites created using WooCommerce can sell shippable as well as downloadable products. So with WooCommerce subscriptions, you can sell either of those products based on subscriptions. You can even sell the digital products like ebooks, pdfs, videos, images, etc on a recurring basis. You can also present product variables effectively and let the visitors choose from them.

An example for product subscriptions

The ecommerce websites involved in the bulk distribution of the products can sell their products on scheduled basis. For instance,  a website that sells raw materials required for some industrial products needs to supply a fixed amount of raw materials at a fixed period. So, the industries can subscribe to their products and get recurring deliveries at the end of each subscription period.

Service subscription

Service subscription is yet another common type of subscriptions. Most of the services available on the internet are on the subscription basis. You try the service online, sign up for it and then choose the subscription pack of your choice to continue using the service. You can also choose if you want the auto-renewal of the service or manual.

The best example for service subscription is hosting service. Suppose, John signs up for the hosting and subscribes for a year worth of service. This enables him to use their server space for a year at the determined fee. When the year completes, he can either continue the service by paying again or he can cancel the service.

Subscription with automatic renewal

There are certain subscription services that will be automatically renewed at the end of subscription period.

So your website will process the recurring payment automatically and the user intervention will NOT be required. WooCommerce subscriptions allow you to create such subscriptions.

But, to create subscriptions with automatic renewal, you much choose a payment gateway that allows the processing of scheduled payments. However, the users can unsubscribe to such package at any time. View the list of payment gateways that support automatic renewals.

Example for automatic renewal

There are certain services and products that are available for automatic renewal subscriptions. One of the most practical examples is crowdfunding websites where the user wants to pay a certain amount for a specific cause.

Let’s say there’s a crowdfunding website that gathers funds for Child education, Women’s rights, and hunger and poverty. So you can create different causes called “Child education”, “Women empowerment” and “Hunger and Poverty” as different products. Optionally, you can create different product variations for each cause. That is, for child education, you can create different charity variations for collecting different amount for the cause.

So, while donating for “Child education”, the users can choose the required amount and subscribe to pay it at a fixed amount. Therefore, the amount will be automatically deducted from the donors account at the determined subscription period, without requiring any action from them.

Subscription with manual renewal

This type of subscription website is a bit different than the website with automatic subscription renewal. Where the automatic renewals don’t ask for confirmation and directly charge the subscribers, the manual renewal will seek the subscriber’s permission for a renewal.

If you want your visitors to choose if they want to renew the subscription after the completion of each subscription period, you can create a website without automatic renewal. This kind of website will need user actions to sanction their subscriptions and pay the fee to renew the service.

The subscription will be kept on hold until the user takes some action to confirm the renewal and pay for the subscription.

Example of manual renewal

There’s a dietitian website aimed at weight maintenance. This website provides monthly consultation and diet chart accordingly. The users can key in your physical details (like weight, height, BMI, etc.). Based on the particulars submitted by the users, the system will generate a diet chart/Daily requirement chart. So, at the end of each subscription period, the users will need to re-subscribe by manually by paying the subscription fee.

And the possibilities are unlimited…

The type of websites mention above are just the example of what you can do with WooCommerce and WooCommerce subscriptions. You can create a website with any of the above-mentioned types of subscriptions or all of them. For instance, you can create a membership website with automatic renewal or a service subscription with manual renewal.

The plugin is robust and you can configure it as per your needs. The cherry on the cake – It’s too easy to understand and use. So you can use your creativity and create remarkable ecommerce websites that best for selling your recurring products online. Access the step by step tutorial to start selling subscriptions using your WordPress website.

Or.. you may use this affordable, alternative plugin

Alternatively, you may also use a very good, affordable Woocommerce subscriptions aleternative plugin. We recommend Subscriptio – WooCommerce Subscriptions for your Ecommerce site.

With this plugin you can create subscription based websites. A website with any purpose that needs subscription facility can be created using this plugin.

Examples of what you can create with WooCommerce subscriptions

  • A store website that delivers products and services at a fixed period, repetitively
  • A health magazine website that delivers a magazine every two weeks

  • A membership website that renews the membership automatically at the end of membership duration

These are some of the most basic examples of what you can create with WooCommerce and WooCommerce subscriptions. You can always try to use the potential of the plugin for your innovative ideas.

Difference between WooCommerce subscriptions and membership?

Sometimes you may get confused between membership and subscription. The difference between membership and subscription is quite unclear, but their meanings are completely different from each other.

WooCommerce has these two very useful products namely – WooCommerce Membership and WooCommerce subscriptions and they are absolutely unrelated to each other.

WooCommerce Membership

As the name states, it is a membership plugin. The membership refers to the membership for your website. As in, the access to part of the website. Lets understand it with an example-

We have a lots of websites that sells WordPress themes and plugins. Most of such themes offer a club membership where the user can pay a certain fee and get access to all their themes(or a group of certain themes). Membership fee may be one time, or yearly fee. So, the membership subscription allows the users, the access to a part of the website for a fixed duration and lets them download their themes.

So, membership is all about “access“. WooCommerce membership subscription is a way to restrict your content for general audience and allowing the access to the registered members only.

For membership that is renewed at a fixed duration, there WooCommerce Membership subscription that works with WooCommerce subscriptions to accept recurring subscription fee at the end of each Membership duration.

WooCommerce Subscriptions

As with membership, subscription has nothing to do with access control. It is all about the products and services that the users would like to buy repeatedly at fixed interval. WooCommerce subscriptions lets you add products/services that you want to provide on subscription basis. The idea of subscription is to accept recurring payments, at a fixed interval!

Works with PayPal??

One of the most common question regarding WooCommerce subscriptions is whether it is compatible with PayPal payment gateway. The reason people prefer PayPal is that, according to a statistics, more than 192 million people worldwide use PayPal and it is one of the simplest to use and most reliable payment options.

Yes! WooCommerce subscriptions plugin works with PayPal. It basically works with all the payment gateways compatible with WooCommerce.

Can WooCommerce subscriptions handle Variable Products?

This WordPress subscriptions allows variable subscriptions. Variable subscription is just like providing variable products on your website. The following example will explain this better.

Example:

When you subscribe to a product or a service, you are likely to receive a discount when you subscribe for a larger duration. For instance – The monthly charge for a service is $150, for 3 months it is $400($50 less), for 6 months it is $800 ($100 discount) and for a year it is $1600 ($200 off). This is the best example for a variable subscription plan. The service/product remains the same, but you can choose the variable of plan that you want to subscribe.

Another such example simple product variation – Suppose you subscribing a product that has size or weight variation. So you can set different subscription price for each variation of the product.

In practical world, variable subscription is more useful than simple subscription. And the good news is, WooCommerce subscriptions has the easiest provision for presenting such “variable” situations for your products in a way that is also easy for users to understand and respond to.

It makes it easy for you, as a store manager, to express your product variations and charge different for them, and at the same time, the buyers can subscribe to the selected variation of your product/service, just like they do for simple products.

How will the recurring payment in WordPress work?

One of the most common questions about WooCommerce Subscriptions is –  Does it bill automatically or will it just notify the visitors to come to your site and pay manually for their subscriptions?

When the user has made a payment for a subscription using a payment gateway that supports automatic recurring payments, they will be billed automatically. This means that the subscription will be renewed without their intervention. However, at any point, if the user’s request to change this for manual payments, you can change that.

What are the Supported Payment gateways?

The WooCommerce subscriptions plugin works with every payment gateway supported by WooCommerce. The plugin allows you to install the desired payment gateway from the wide range of available plugins. There are some payment gateways that allow recurring payment collection. So, you can choose the payment gateway based on how you want to accept the payments.

How does it support Free trials??

If you want a product or a system that provides free trial for a definite period like one week, or a month before the users sign up for the subscription, WooCommerce subscriptions lets you do that very easily.

For example, the user will be granted a free trail period of 15 days after which, he will be charged a sign up fee of $20 and then his subscription will be active for $180 per month.

Sending emails regarding subscriptions

It is important to keep the users notified of what is happening with their subscriptions. Emails are the best way to stay in touch and keep the users notified.

WooCommerce subscriptions has an automated email system that sends a subscriber an email notice on the registered email address. This emailing system sends emails on the following 3 occasions.

  1. When the subscription is renewed
  2. user subscription is cancelled
  3. Subscription is upgraded

However, there’s no way to send a reminder a few days before the renewal date. You’ll have to use another plugin to do so.

Conclusion

WooCommerce subscriptions provides you with the most convenient way to sell your products/services on repetitive basis. It is really easy to use and manage. The plugin lets you create products and services with/without variations that you can allow your users to subscribe. Even from the users’ perspective, it is quite easy to understand as well as subscribe with such websites. Moreover, you can choose and integrate the payment gateway of your choice.
